A Reality Check for Students Planning to Come to Canada for Higher Education

Canada is still one of the best destinations for higher education, but only if you understand a few basic facts before making your decision.

• The average tuition fee is around CAD 20,000 per year.

• The average living expense is around CAD 12,000 per year.

• You can work part-time while studying and full-time during your scheduled summer or academic breaks.

• However, you cannot expect to pay your tuition fees with a part-time job alone. You will likely need continuous financial support from Nepal during your studies.

If your long-term goal is to settle permanently in Canada, I generally recommend considering institutions in provinces such as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Manitoba. These provinces may offer a more feasible pathway to permanent residency for many students.

That said, permanent residency depends on many factors, including your education, work experience, language skills, occupation, and the immigration policies in place at the time you apply. I am not saying that other provinces do not have PR pathways. They certainly do. I simply believe these provinces may provide comparatively better opportunities for many international students.
